What is Title IX?
Title IX is a federal law, enacted in 1972, stating that no person on the basis of sex shall be “excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
Title IX protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. Sex-based discrimination can include sexual assault, relationship abuse, stalking, sexual harassment, and bullying or cyber-bullying involving sexual misconduct. Title IX does NOT include discrimination based on disability, race, religion, national origin, or age.
Title IX applies to allegations that meet the following criteria:
- The conduct in question meets the definition of sexual harassment
- The conduct occurred in a Lake County Schools education program or activity; and
- The conduct occurred against a person in the United States
