Lake County residents are able to pick up one free bike per household at the Lake County landfill through the Bicycle Re-Cycle program. To obtain a new child or adult bike or scooter, visit the landfill, located at 13130 County Landfill Road, Tavares, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and be sure to have ID handy.
The program began when Solid Waste employees noticed perfectly good bikes being thrown away simply because children had outgrown them. In addition, a large portion of the bikes are donated by the Eustis Police Department from their unclaimed lost and found. Through this partnership, Lake County has given out more than 1,000 discarded bicycles since 2009.
Supplies are limited and bicycles may also be donated to the landfill during the same hours of operation.
