About Alee Academy

A Safe Harbor for Students Since 1999

Alee Academy is a tuition-free public charter high school in Lake County, Florida dedicated to helping students overcome academic challenges, recover credits, and graduate with confidence. We specialize in supporting students who need a second chance offering smaller school environment, individualized instruction, emotional support, and hands-on learning experiences that prepare them for success beyond high school.

Our Story

In 1998, a group of visionary community members recognized a growing need: students who were falling through the cracks of traditional education. A year later, Alee Academy was founded as a safe, structured, and supportive environment where these students could thrive. Our name, “Alee,” comes from the nautical term meaning sheltered from the storm, a fitting reflection of our mission.

Over the years, we’ve grown from a small startup school into a recognized model of success in dropout prevention and academic recovery. We’ve proudly served over 1,000 students, many of whom have earned their high school diplomas or successfully transitioned back to their home schools on track to graduate.

Recognition and Awards

In 2002, Alee Academy was honored with the Crystal Star Award for Excellence in Dropout Recovery, Intervention, and Prevention by the National Dropout Prevention Network. This national recognition highlighted our dedication to supporting at-risk youth and developing effective, personalized strategies for academic achievement.

In 2025, Alee Academy earned the highest possible designation from the Florida Department of Education: a Commendable rating under the state’s alternative school accountability system. This marks the first time in our 25-year history that we have received this level of recognition. The rating reflects significant academic progress by our students, including a 55% gain in reading and a 68% gain in math. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our students, staff, teachers, administrators, and the continued support from our board, parents, and community partners. We are incredibly proud of this milestone and look forward to building on this momentum as we prepare for the 2025–2026 school year.

Our Impact

Students come to Alee discouraged, behind on credits, or disconnected from traditional school life and they leave with a diploma, a future, and a new sense of pride. Many go on to college, technical programs, the workforce, or the military.

Philosophy

The philosophy of Alee Academy Charter School is to utilize the latest technology and teaching strategies to increase the academic, vocational and social skills of each individual student. It is the goal of the school to discover and develop the special strengths of each student and nurture these in a safe and secure environment.

We recognize that the majority of our pupils have had repeated failures in their previous school environments and therefore require adaption in curriculum, flexibility on the part of the staff and modification in instructional strategies. The approach to the teaching and learning that is offered to each student is designed to me his/her individual needs.
